5 Best Drag and Drop Website and Landing Page Builders 2016

Posted by:

It wasn’t so very long ago when the only way to create your own website, or even a single web page, was to either study coding and web design and do it yourself, or pay someone thousands of dollars to do it for you.

Thankfully, those days are gone.

Today, literally anyone can have their own website just by clicking a few buttons, and customizing your website has become drag and drop simple.

There are literally hundreds of competing products in the web page builder niche now, but they’re not all created equal.

In this post I’m going to briefly touch on some of the best website builder options out there and which will be the best for you, depending on what you’re trying to do.

Top 5 Drag and Drop Web Page Builders

Here are the top 5 in order of my personal preference…

1) ClickFunnels

ClickFunnels launched in 2014 and quickly became a household name among online marketers.

This is probably due mostly to the fact that it was created by Russel Brunson, who is a household name himself already, and who undoubtedly has a huge reserve of capital to invest in making his products wildly successful.

ClickFunnels is by far the most reliable and stable page builder of them all. They have a huge and ever growing user base, and they charge more per month than their competition, so they have a lot of money to reinvest into making their platform fast, innovative and reliable.

Who Should Use ClickFunnels?

ClickFunnels will be your best choice if you need more than just marketing and landing pages (like just a capture page and sales page).

CF has a ton of really impressive features like the ability to literally create your own affiliate program, front to back within the system, even allowing you to take payments through their merchant account.

If you’re doing high level business on the internet, there really is no solution that comes close to ClickFunnels.

For the majority of users though, they will most likely never use most of what this offers. CF charges $97 per month at the smallest pricing tier. So if you’re paying that much for a service, you want to make sure you’re going to use what you’re paying for.

However, they do offer a free trial, so you might as well sign up and play around with it so you can see what you think for yourself.

2) InstaBuilder 2.0

Instabuilder is a web page builder that is a WordPress plugin. Instabuilder has a robust page editor that is the closest rival to ClickFunnels that I’ve found.

It’s simple and intuitive and has all the features you’d expect to find in a page builder created for internet marketers (like countdown timers, exit popups, 2-step optin forms, split testing, tracking, etc.)

To be fair, ClickFunnels does all this stuff too, but Instabuilder does it a lot cheaper (currently $77 one-time for a 3 site license).

Who Should Use InstaBuilder?

InstaBuilder will be the best choice for those who want a simple page builder to create marketing pages like capture pages, video sales pages, webinar registration pages, etc.

This is just a page builder, no extra stuff like autoresponder service, payment processor, etc. is included here like with ClickFunnels.

For the vast majority of people reading this blog though, that should be exactly what you need.

You should already have a program or affiliate product you’re promoting, as well as an autoresponder service like AWeber and Get Response, and now you’re looking for a way to separate yourself from the competition and brand yourself with your own sales funnel and marketing pages.

If that’s you, InstaBuilder should work great.

Please note that InstBuilder is a WordPress plugin, so you should be somewhat familiar with WordPress, or at least willing to learn the basics.

3) Optimize Press

Optimize Press has been around for a while and was one of the original pioneers of this whole drag and drop website building thing.

They set themselves apart by allowing members to not only create single marketing pages and sales funnels, but also entire blogs and membership sites as well.

If you’re only looking for a page builder though, I would recommend Instabuilder over Optimize Press because I like their editor better. There are more design options and it’s a bit easier to use.

Who Should Use Optimize Press?

Optimize Press will work best for those people who are wanting to build a full website, blog, or membership site. This is where Optimize Press shines and this is where you’ll get the most value.

OP is a WordPress theme, so again, some WordPress experience is recommended. Current price is $97 for a 3 site license.

4) Unbounce

Unbounce is a company that has a really solid, reliable product and a great company culture as well (check out their blog for tons of free marketing advice).

The most unique thing about Unbounce’s page editor to me is that they give you the ability to literally move every single element of your page EXACTLY where you want it.

Most other page builders are built on a grid and elements kind of snap to the space you place them. So if you want to move a button a few pixels to the left, you have to go into the settings for that element and add some padding.

This works fine for most situations, but there is the rare instance where you want your page builder to do something it just can’t do because of the limitations of the snap/grid construction.

Unbounce is different though because you can just grab whatever you want and drag it to the exact position you want it, and it just magically stays there. If you’ve ever moved stuff around in a program like PowerPoint, it works just like that… but for websites.

They also have some additional advanced features like the ability to match your landing page copy with the copy in a PPC ad automatically.

Who Should Use Unbounce?

The main reason I don’t use Unbounce much myself is because they don’t have a lot of the more popular features like 2-step optins and exit pops built into the system via drag and drop elements.

You can create those kinds of things, and pretty much anything else you want… if you know how to code it yourself.

But the Unbounce editor isn’t really for novices looking to create great looking pages with advanced functionality easily, it’s more like a sandbox where you can do pretty much anything, as long as you already know exactly what you want to do and how to do it.

So to me, Unbounce seems like it’s best for more advanced users who already know what they want to create, and they’re just looking for a platform to help them do it.

The cheapest plan for Unbounce in $49 per month.

5) LeadPages

LeadPages is another very popular landing page builder. They’re one of the most used and recommended services because they are easy to use and also because they’ve been around for quite a while.

They also have probably the best and easiest to use tracking and analytics, built right into the platform.

LeadPages is quite a bit different than the other drag and drop builders on this list though, and that’s because they aren’t really drag and drop…

LeadPages gives you templates that are pretty much as is. There’s not much customization that can be done. You can obviously change the copy on the page and you can hide any elements you don’t want. But there’s no way to re-arrange things or add extra stuff.

They do this because they say that they’ve tested these pages and know they work, so letting people change them too much would lower conversions. They even rank pages based on other people’s conversion results.

This kind of makes sense and kind of doesn’t. It’s good that beginners aren’t able to break their pages, but just because other people are getting good results with a page doesn’t mean you will too.

There’s so much that goes into creating a winning marketing campaign. Maybe those who got good results with a certain page sent it out to a list of prospects who already know them and trust their recommendations…

Maybe they used that page as part of a highly targeted PPC campaign that had all kinds of other factors involved in creating those good results.

So it’s nice to have that conversion data, but I’m not sure how relevant it really is.

Who Should Use LeadPages?

In my opinion, LeadPages is best for people who want to get something up as quickly as possible that will look very modern and professional right out of the box.

It’s also great for beginners who might be worried about things being too technical and complicated, or who are worried they might break something if they’re given too much freedom.

If you like to be creative though, LeadPages can feel a bit like working with one hand tied behind your back since you have so few customization options.

The cheapest LeadPages plan is currently $37 per month.

  • It just keeps getting easier and easier to build websites, doesn’t it? From GeoCities way back when to WordPress to Squarespace and now drag and drop builders that help people get design right without being a cookie cutter template. Have you had a chance to try Instapage (full disclosure: work there)? Would love to hear your thoughts as it is an even simpler, yet more powerful tool than LeadPages and Unbounce.

In any case, nice roundup of simple tools for drag-and-drop web builders!

    • Hi Taylen, thanks for the comment! I hadn’t heard of Instapage but I signed up for a free account and messed around with it for about an hour.

What I like a lot is that you can freely move elements around to precise positions like Unbounce. I also like that the editor isn’t overwhelming with options so beginners can jump in without too much of a learning curve. I feel like I could pretty easily recreate my current sales funnels with this editor pretty easily.

There were a couple of things I didn’t understand right away, but I notice Instapage has a lot of tutorial articles with walkthrough videos that are well done and answered my questions.

A couple of style elements I’d like to see included is the ability to change the font for individual text elements, and also the option to use more stylized bullets, like check marks and other icons.

I also didn’t see any way to enter third party tracking info into the header and footer unless you have a pro or premium account.

Those are my initial impressions. Seems like a good quality page builder.

      • Appreciate the feedback, thanks for checking it out. Yes, custom code editing is reserved for the higher packages, which are typically larger companies or agencies. However, our Basic plan still includes Google Analytics to get most data an individual would need. Continually trying to update and improve the plans, though, and feedback helps. If you have any other feedback or questions, feel free to send it along.

What does this have to do with NWC??

    • Hi Robert, when marketing NWC, or any income opportunity, it’s important to have a sales funnel that works. For those who are on our team, we supply access to our sales funnel and marketing training that they can use. But if you’re marketing something else, on a team that doesn’t provide those resources, or maybe your just ready to start creating your own stuff, leveraging tools like the ones in this post can be essential to your success.
