SEO stands for search engine optimization. This simply means that as a website owner or creator of web content you need to optimize your content in a way so that search engines know what your content is about and know when to display your content in the search results for users.
If you don’t take this aspect of online marketing into consideration, search engines like Google may have a hard time deciding the relevance of your content and as a result your content may never show up for users who are actually looking for the answers you have provided.

What is Keyword Optimization?
Keyword optimization means that you target each piece of content on your site for a specific keyword or keyword phrase. For example, the primary keyword for this post is “Google Keyword Tool”. Because this is my primary keyword, I need to have it in the title, preferably first. If I was writing this post for print I might just leave it off and simply have the title be “The Best Free Keyword Tool You’ll Ever Use” because it sounds better and invites the reader to read the post.
But because this is a web post I am more concerned with making sure Google knows exactly what my post is about and what keywords I want it to rank for than I am about creating clever titles. That being said, you never want to go overboard with keywords to the point where your content is unreadable. You want to have a balance.
What is The Google Keyword Tool?
The Google Keyword Tool is a part of Google Adwords. This tool makes it extremely easy to do basic keyword research by providing you with a wealth of statistical information as well as helpful keyword suggestions. There are many other keyword tools out there, some of which have more sophisticated options, but for a price. The Google Keyword tool is always free and the statistics and suggestions come straight from Google. Since Google is who you are most likely trying to rank your content with, it makes sense to go straight to the source for suggestions, right?
How to Use The Google Keyword Tool
The Google Keyword Tool is extremely easy to use:
1) Simply enter a keyword phrase into the word or phrase box, fill out the CAPTCHA form and watch The Google Keyword Tool go to work.
2) The Google Keyword Tool gives you three sets of statistics (competition, global monthly searches, and local monthly searches). It gives you these stats first for the exact keyword you entered, then for a series of other keyword suggestions that the tool thinks would be relevant to you.
3) The competition section however relates to adwords and so is not necessarily relevant to trying to rank content organically. To investigate the competition for a keyword, you need to type that keyword into Google with quotation marks and see how many results come up. The more results, the more competition and the less chance you will have of ranking for that keyword. Look for keywords that yield 300,000 results or less.
4) You are looking for keywords that have low competition and decent monthly searches. You don’t need to go for keywords with hundreds of thousands of monthly searches. These will almost always be extremely competitive anyway. A few thousand is just fine. If you are ranking #1 on Google for a keyword with 3,000 monthly searches, that’s 3,000 potential visits to your site a month for that one post alone.
How to do Keyword Research
Once you have a topic in mind to write about, or you are looking for ideas about what to write about, it is time to do a little keyword research. The first step is brainstorming. Some things to consider are:
1) Know your audience – What is your ideal target market going to be typing in to find your post? What question or problem is your post solving? Tailor your keywords and content to meet their probably search queries.
2) Long Tail Keywords are better – A long tail keyword is a keyword consisting of at least three words. Long tail keywords are easier to rank for because they are more specific and thus have less competition.
3) Use The Google Keyword Tool’s suggestions – The first keyword you enter might be terrible. It might have really high competition and hardly any search results. That’s OK. Take a look at the suggestions you are given and you might just find some keyword gold in there. This is also a great way to get ideas for future posts.
