No, we’re not talking about drugs and alcohol here…we’re talking about toxins that are much harder to identify, the ones that slowly creep into your life and poison you from the inside out. Much has been said in personal development material over the years about mindset, attitude, positive reinforcement, etc. etc.
Unfortunately though, more often than not, exercises in positive reinforcement and attitude adjustment simply end up causing burnout…it’s like trying to jam a square peg into a round hole, it just doesn’t fit.
This is because the root of the problem is still there. Many times the source of our negative tendencies, our barriers to success, lie in our daily habits…the things we overlook and deem insignificant.
Identifying Your Toxins
Are you someone who suffers from negative tendencies or low self esteem? Ask yourself, what do I spend my time doing? Whether you know it or not, your mind is like a sponge, and every thing you interact with on a daily basis gets absorbed, assimilated, and made a small part of who you are. If you spend 10 hours a day watching the news and then wonder why you are depressed and hopeless all the time, turn off the tv!
It’s the little things that do the most damage. Nothing ever just happens. People don’t just get divorced. No one just fails in business. It is always an accumulation of little things that went overlooked until it was too late.
So identify your toxins. Take a look at your daily habits and think about yourself objectively. Who are you spending time with, what are you eating, reading, watching on tv? It’s not that hard to make a positive change in your life and business. You just have to know where to start…and to do that you have to pay attention to the little things.
Just Do It
One of the greatest barriers to this kind of change is that most of the time you aren’t going to think your behavior is harmful. It is difficult to perceive a direct correlation between a destructive action and its consequences sometimes because the changes are so small…that’s why we keep doing them…and before we know it we are in trouble and don’t even know how we got there.
That’s why you just need to do it. If you think about it, it won’t be too hard for you to identify behavior and habits that you know you could do without. The question is whether or not you will apply this principle and actually stop doing it…most people won’t.
Monitor Your Progress
As you begin to cleanse some of the toxic elements out of your life, pay attention to your progress. You may be surprised to see some positive change manifesting itself due to the absence of those negative influences. Seeing some positive results will also motivate you to continue to make changes.
This is an excellent new year’s resolution and one that can help to turn things around for the better if you really pay attention to your habits, identify your toxins and take action to expel those poisonous influences from your life.
